Golf Courses at Atalaya Golf & Country Club

Old Course

Designed in 1968 by Bernhard von Limburger, a German golf designer and historian, the Old Course is a tough par-72 layout. The fairways are relatively forgiving, and the greens are large and undulating, but trouble awaits those who stray far off line.

The 6,714-yard Old Course is a classic resort layout with Bermuda grass underfoot, where mastering the elevated putting surfaces is the key to success.

New Course

Atalaya's New Course was opened in 1991 following architectural work by Paul Krings, and affords fantastic views over the Mediterranean and Gibraltar. At 5,821 yards, the New is considerably shorter than its more established neighbour, but still represents a considerable test for golfers of all abilities. Both courses have a good variety of tee boxes to ensure an appropriate challenge for all visitors.

Atalaya is also home to the headquarters of the Professional Golfers Association of Europe, and the Atalaya International Golf Academy and has been chosen to host the annual Team Championships.

This course is tricked up and may challenge some higher handicappers. Lots of holes with no bail areas, which can be daunting. If you like plotting your way around a course, this one is for you. The greens looked worn out and some had areas where new turfs were still bedding in. Also looked like they had been over watered. A challenging course but fun.

An afternoon tee off, we knew it would be tight with the light but the starter managed to get us off early so much appreciated. Lunch before and drinks after in the bar were good. We played the Blue course which was a tricky narrow course sculpted into a hillside. Some fanatic holes with a great sense of achievement when occasionally conquered. The course showed some signs of wear but still very playable and acceptable for the time of year. The Old course which you drive through to get to the 1st Tee looked to be the more premium course and in better condition.

Fantastic. Nearly every shot was a blind one making for a fun and exciting round. Many of the fairways were sloped and if you hit the ball the wrong way, you were punished. Difficult greens needed to be thought about before commencing your putting. Would recommend the new course over the old.

The old course was good to play. Depending who you were coupled with in your 4 ball, you either enjoyed your round or struggled to communicate if English wasn't spoken. Games were slow, simple because of usage. This course is generally used more than the new.

We didn't get to play this course as information about the new times had not been passed on to us by YGT. We were given the option of waiting for the new time (3 hrs +) or being transferred to the New Course, which we opted for. Again a very hilly course and not one which I would have chosen for our group. There was a route march to the first tee.

Having played here last year, we were disappointed with the conditions, to be fair there is a lot of building work going on, but the greens were the worst I’ve played on for some time, that’s not an excuse for my poor play, they were shocking. It’s a shame as this is a nice club with friendly staff.
